Markscanner

A grading tool for math teachers

Built for handwritten math.

Markscanner helps teachers scan, review, and grade handwritten math quizzes and tests faster. It suggests marks, partial marks, and per-question feedback, flags uncertain answers for your review, and helps generate a clean one-page feedback sheet for each student — while you stay in control of the final grade.

  • Partial marks and worked solutions
  • Flags uncertain answers for review
  • Works with the paper tests you already give
A stack of scanned papers becomes reviewed marks and a printable feedback sheet. SCANNED FLAGGED 3 / 4 — METHOD OK 24/30

The problem

Why grading math is hard

Math isn’t just right or wrong. Two students can reach the same answer through completely different work, and another can have the right method with a single arithmetic slip. The steps carry most of the learning, and most of the marking.

1. 2x + 6 = 14
2. 2x = 8
3. x = 3 arithmetic slip
method correct → 3 / 4
  • Partial marks take time

Deciding partial credit takes longer than checking a final answer.

  • Many valid forms

Factored, expanded, mixed number, decimal — all deserve credit.

  • Steps matter

The worked steps carry the learning, not just the last line.

  • Handwriting is messy

Some pages are ambiguous on purpose. A model shouldn’t just guess.

  • Feedback is most useful fresh

The sooner students see their work marked, the more the comments actually land.

Grading a class set of handwritten math shouldn’t mean losing your evenings and weekends. It also shouldn’t mean handing the job to a machine that doesn’t understand how math work actually looks on paper.

What it is

A review-and-approve marking assistant

Markscanner is a web-based marking assistant for teachers who still work with printed quizzes, chapter tests, and handwritten solutions. Whether you upload a test you already give or create a new one, it drafts the rubric (what each question is worth and how marks are assigned) for you to review and approve.

Then upload a scanned PDF or images of student work. Markscanner grades against the rubric you approved, and you review the draft marks and comments question by question before approving final results and printing a one-page feedback sheet for each student.

It’s a review-and-approve workflow, not blind automation. You stay the teacher; Markscanner does the repetitive first pass.

Where it fits

Three kinds of quizzes Markscanner handles well

Start-of-unit

Diagnostic quizzes

Find out what students remember from last year before you start teaching. Use the results to plan where to start.

Weekly

Formative quizzes

Catch misunderstandings fast. Reteach what's not landing while the content is still fresh.

End-of-unit

Summative tests

Grade an entire class set in the time it used to take to grade five.

How it works

From a fresh test to graded feedback, in five stages

  1. 01 · Upload or create

Upload the tests you already give, or create a new one with Markscanner. It drafts a marking rubric from your materials for you to review and approve before grading.

  2. 02 · Print

Print it on regular paper. No QR codes, no custom booklets. Hand it to your students.

  3. 03 · Scan

Scan or photograph the finished class set in one upload. Markscanner figures out which page belongs to which student.

  4. 04 · Grade

Draft marks and per-question comments appear. You review every answer, adjust where you disagree, and approve.

  5. 05 · Report

Print per-student feedback sheets, export a class CSV, and see which questions tripped the class up.

Benefits

What teachers get out of it

  • Spend less time on repetitive marking

Focus on the flagged and ambiguous answers, not every single one.

  • Return feedback sooner

Get tests back while the content is still fresh for students.

  • More consistent per-question comments

The same mistake gets the same note across the whole class set.

  • Printable one-page student feedback

Grades, comments, and next steps on a single sheet per student.

  • Spot class-wide error trends

See where the class struggled so you know what to reteach tomorrow.

  • A/B versions to discourage copying

Run Version A and Version B of the same test. Markscanner tracks which paper each student wrote and grades accordingly.

  • Generate blank tests with AI

Draft a new quiz or chapter test as a printable vector PDF, with an optional Version B variant.

  • Teacher oversight on every final grade

Nothing goes to a student until you’ve approved it.

Teacher-in-the-loop

Markscanner is designed as a teacher-in-the-loop system. It helps with draft marks, comments, and organisation — but you stay in control of final grades.

Low-confidence and messy responses are flagged for your review before anything is finalised, and every mark is editable before the feedback sheet is generated. The goal isn’t to hand marking over to a model — it’s to take the repetitive first pass off your plate so your time goes to the judgment calls only a teacher can make.

Per-student output

A one-page feedback sheet per student

After you approve, Markscanner can generate a clean one-page printable feedback sheet for each student: their grade, per-question comments, what they did well, and what to work on next. It’s the kind of feedback most teachers want to give every student but rarely have time to write by hand for thirty papers in a row.

  • Grade, per-question comments, strengths, next steps.
  • Editable before print — rewrite a comment in your voice.
  • Print & staple to the returned paper.

Class insights

Know what to reteach tomorrow

Because every question gets marked the same way, the class data actually means something. See which questions tripped up the most students, spot common mistakes across submissions, and know exactly what to reteach tomorrow — without paging back through thirty papers to piece it together.

Blank test generation

Draft your next quiz with AI

When you need a fresh test, Markscanner can also generate one for you. Pick a topic, difficulty, and number of questions; Markscanner drafts the quiz as a printable vector PDF with proper math typesetting. You edit what you want, regenerate individual questions, and print. An optional Version B variant is produced from the same source to discourage copying.

  • Vector PDFs with selectable, searchable math.
  • Per-question regenerate when one isn’t quite right.
  • Canadian spelling, metric units, and Canadian contexts.
  • Answer-key PDF generated alongside the student copy.

Chapter 6 quiz

Version A

1. Solve for x: 3x + 7 = 22 [2 marks]

2. Factor the expression x² − 5x + 6. [3 marks]

3. Graph y = (x − 2)² − 4 and label the vertex. [4 marks]

Questions

Questions teachers ask

Is Markscanner fully automatic?
No. It suggests marks and comments; you review, adjust, and approve before anything is finalised.
Does it handle messy handwriting?
It’s built for handwritten work, and anything low-confidence or unclear gets flagged for your review instead of being silently guessed.
Can I export grades to my gradebook?
Yes. You can download a CSV of the class results and drop it into whatever gradebook you already use.
